Istanbul Bilgi University’s Fall ‘22-’23 final project required the students to create a 3D self-supporting, component-based system exploring the relationships between geometry, light, and material. Their structure of light was hung or adapted at the locations that are designated by Aslı Eylem Kolbaş and Aysel Abasova.

1st Year Studio:

Structures of Light

They examined various materials and their interactions with different lighting conditions while keeping geometric and structural capacity in mind. Joint design and their effect on the overall geometry were evaluated as design parameters. These material tests were asked to be carried out while designing their component system.

Basic Design is a computation and craftsmanship-based shared studio for architects, interior designers and industrial designers in Istanbul Bilgi University for the 1st year students, where the infamous final project is to build a 1:1 pavilion.

In Spring ‘23, the syllabus was prepared by the permanent instructors over the years, but were slightly changed and the students were asked to contextualize the formerly solely computation-based works. Therefore, they decided what kind of deployable shelter they wished to design based on research. These could have various functions such as shelters for refugees, disasters, camping, public events, etc. At the end of this research, they should have developed a scenario for the use. As a result, they started with a collage, which formed a narrative clarifying the function and context of the design; about the atmosphere and the users.

1st Year Studio:

Deployable Shelter

After the contextualization, they have teamed up and worked in groups to construct it in 1:1 scale. It should have been easily disassembled and assembled, folded and unfolded, or expandable and collapsible. Therefore, they were also responsible for the design of its transportability from one place to another. The deployable structure should have been self-standing and its size should have allowed for at least one person to lie/sleep in it comfortably.
